Gas molecules traveling through the pipe or rubber tube generates friction and thus electrostatic electricity, which causes gas molecules to clump together. The burn is unclean as some gas molecules are wasted because oxygen combusts only with gas molecules attached on the external side of the clumped gas molecules (the smell of gas is the result of unburned gas molecules).
